Integrating Arabic varieties across Contexts
Munther Younes
In this 3 hour workshop, Dr. Younes will follow up on his keynote talk by focuing on the practical aspects of integrating ‘Āmmiyya with Fuṣḥā in the Arabic-as a-foreign-language classroom, and in materials developed following the integrated approach to Arabic instruction. He will address a number of questions that have been raised by AFL teachers who are interested in integrating Arabic varieties in their class, such as:
- How do I introduce both ‘Āmmiyya and Fuṣḥā simultaneouslywithout confusing students?
- How do I know and explain to students that a word or a grammatical structure is part of ‘Āmmiyya or part of Fuṣḥā?
- How should ‘Āmmiyya be written?
- Should I set a certain amount of time for each of the varieties?
- When do I introduce and use each variety?
- How do I deal with the issue of mixing varieties; for example, using ‘Āmmiyya in writing or Fuṣḥā in speaking?
After the discussion and guidelines of a successful integrated class, participants will work in small groups to create a lesson or a unit based on the integrated approach and describe ways to effectively teach it to their own context.
